In October, NOWRA conducted its 9th Onsite Wastewater Mega-Conference: “Clean Water For Healthy Communities” in the picturesque setting of Norfolk, VA. The event was a collaborative effort between NOWRA, the National Association of Wastewater Technicians, State Onsite Regulators Alliance, and the Virginia Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association, the state’s affiliate to NOWRA.
This successful gathering boasted an impressive turnout, with over 730 participants—marking it as the largest in recent memory. Diverse professionals from various sectors within the onsite wastewater industry, including regulators, engineers, soil scientists, educators, and installers, attended the two-day conference. The event featured five concurrent tracks, offering a comprehensive range of topics. Notable subjects included nutrients, hydraulics, problem-solving, policy, environmental justice, education, inspection, installation, and design, presented by industry-leading speakers.
The conference also hosted a substantial exhibition with participants from across the nation. The networking opportunities embedded within the conference provided a valuable platform for industry professionals to connect. A series of engaging events, including a golf outing, exhibitor reception, a social gathering at the Virginia Air & Space Science Center, and two field trips, offered unique insights. One field trip included visits to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, a convenience store repair site, and a cutting-edge treatment and drip dispersal system serving Whitestone, Virginia. The other trip focused on addressing challenges in single-family residence system repairs, some of which were supported through VDH Septic and Well Assistance Program Grants, aiding homeowners falling below poverty guidelines.
This Mega-Conference, known for its informative sessions, was particularly exceptional. The upcoming event is scheduled for October 2024 in Spokane, Washington.
